Intermittent fasting: what the research actually says

Intermittent fasting gets pitched two ways: as a metabolic hack that melts fat while you sleep, or as a fad that wrecks your metabolism. Neither framing holds up well against the actual studies.
The honest headline
A well-cited 2020 trial in JAMA Internal Medicine compared 16:8 time-restricted eating against a normal eating schedule with matched calories, and found no meaningful difference in weight loss between the two groups. The pattern that shows up across most of the literature: fasting works when it helps someone eat less overall, not because of anything special about the clock.
Where it does help
For some people, a shorter eating window naturally reduces the number of times a day they have to make a food decision, which cuts down on the small unplanned extras that add up. If a smaller window means you stop grazing at 11pm, that's a real behavior change — it's just not a metabolic one.
Where it doesn't
If you're someone who overeats once the window opens, or who trains hard early and needs fuel to perform, forcing a fasting schedule can work against you. There's no evidence a fasting window is required for fat loss, and no evidence it's harmful for most healthy adults either. It's a scheduling tool, not a metabolic switch — useful if the shape of it fits your day, skippable if it doesn't.
